The minister Edson Fachinvice-president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), issued a warning, this Friday (8), about what he called the advance of “authoritarian populism” in several countries around the world.
The magistrate’s speech comes just three days after confirming the victory of Donald Trumpfrom the Republican Party, in the United States presidential elections.
According to the latest updates, Trump had obtained 295 delegates in the Electoral College – 270 were needed. The current vice president, Kamala Harris, from the Democratic Party, had 226.

Furthermore, Trump’s Republican Party still secured the majority of seats in the Senate and, possibly, will also be predominant in the Chamber. The president-elect also beat Kamala in the popular vote.
Fachin gave the opening speech at a seminar promoted by the Supreme Court, entitled “The Permanent Court of Review of Mercosul: Relevance and Perspectives”
“Let us pay attention to the current scenario. Freedom and democracy are conditions of possibility for a livable future. A wave of authoritarian populism is rising”, stated the vice-president of the Court, without mentioning who he was referring to.

In another part of his speech, Fachin said that “a new virus is spreading and contaminating justice systems” – again without explaining what it was about. “The vaccine challenges the temper of the courts. Comply with resilience and democratic vigilance”, said the magistrate.
Integration
In his speech at the opening of the seminar, Edson Fachin defended integration and greater cooperation between the courts of the countries that make up Mercosur.
“In Mercosur, as we know, each country develops its own interpretation. Therefore, and so that a minimum of dialogue between Mercosur State Parties is possible, greater communication between national courts is encouraged”, noted the minister.

“One of the most important and innovative dimensions of this expansion of the scope originally imagined for Mercosur is the consolidation and improvement of its dispute settlement system”, concluded Fachin.
