“Despite the victory for president, the issue of abortion achieved significant achievements. In 10 states where the issue was on the agenda, the pro-choice agenda won in 7, reflecting relevant support for these rights in different regions of the country”, he says Izabela Patriota, director of International Relations at Lola in Brazil.
According to her, even in Florida and Nebraska, where the expansion of the right to abortion was rejected, access is already allowed, the difference being the gestational period. The exception was South Dakota, where legislation is even more restrictive than Brazil’s.
“These results reveal a divided American society, where, despite the electoral victories of conservative candidates, the debate on individual freedoms, such as the right to abortion, remains latent and vigorous in several spheres”, says Patriota.
