For the 2025 season, Brazil will have the largest number of surfers in the elite Championship Tour (CT) of the World Surf League (WSL). This majority presence reflects the strength of Brazilian surfing, with extremely competitive athletes who have been dominating the international scene in recent years. The Brazilian group is known as Brazilian Storma movement that revolutionized world surfing and placed Brazil as one of the greatest powers in the sport.
The front group has Filipe Toledo, (2 times world champion), Gabriel Medina (three times world champion), Italo Ferreira (world champion), and other rising talents, such as João Chianca and Yago Dora. Furthermore, there is a new generation of Brazilian surfers guaranteeing classifications both in the CT ranking and in the Challenger Series, which further expands the country’s representation in the WSL. The storm doesn’t stop.
In 2025 the Brazilian team will feature: Tatiana Weston-Webb, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Ítalo Ferreira, Yago Dora, João Chianca, Samuel Pupo, Miguel Pupo, Deivid Silva, Alejo Muniz, Ian Gouveia, Edgard Groggia.
This dominance and the number of Brazilian surfers also bring greater pressure to the athletes, as they compete with other big names in the sport, such as John John Florence, from the USA, and Jack Robinson, from Australia. But Brazil remains one of the favorites in the tour stages, with its athletes winning several of the main competitions and securing high scores in the global rankings.
But the fact of having a greater number of Brazilians does not take the foreigners out of the game. John Florence, despite his calm manner, is a machine when he is at sea, he has excellent maneuvers and will always be a difficult competitor to beat. The current world champion has a private fight between him and Gabriel, the two have three world titles and would put the winner on the same level as Mark Richards with four titles, above them, only Kelly Slater with eleven titles, but Kelly doesn’t count, he doesn’t It’s from this planet.
Australian Jack Robinson in recent years has shown that he is increasingly prepared to fight on equal terms with any surfer on the tour. Another Australian who stands out is Ethan Ewing, with very stylish surfing, he makes it look easy and will undoubtedly come with other maneuvers in his arsenal. Local Griffin Colapinto from Trestle in California has hit the beam the last two years, participated in the finals and failed to win the title at home. Remembering that in recent years the finals were in Trestles and with that, many say that his chances were precisely surfing the decision at home, others believe that the American will feel more comfortable away from the local pressure, can surf more calmly and dream more once with the world title.
The circuit is increasingly competitive, nowadays the chances are no longer concentrated in one or two athletes, the level is very high and the disputes will be very interesting.
