According to Itamaraty, discussions should last until the summit in Rio, but the idea is that peace needs to be reached
The Brazilian government is negotiating with the G20 countries to include an excerpt about the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East in the declaration of the bloc’s summit that will take place on November 18 and 19, in Rio. According to Itamaraty, the discussions should last until the last moments, but the idea is that peace needs to be reached.
“The issue of the war in Ukraine and also the issue of the Palestinians and the Middle East. So, yes, there is a discussion between governments to reach a consensual language on these 2 topics. But the main message, of course, is the message that we need to make peace with not just these conflicts, but all conflicts.”declared Ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, secretary of economic and financial affairs.
According to him, the search for world peace is directly linked to the main objectives of the Brazilian government in the presidency of the G20, which are the reform of international governance, the fight against hunger and poverty and the sustainable energy transition. He mentioned, however, that to include the topic of geopolitical conflicts in the 2023 declaration, negotiations lasted until hours before the summit.
“It should be the highest goals of the international community, which is the fight against poverty, promoting sustainable development and even combating climate change. So, so that we can concentrate financial resources and know how conflicts they suck up resources, in the sense, I would say, of reducing the possibilities of greater resources and investments to combat poverty, to combat climate change”these.
Asked about Volodymyr Zelensky’s presence at the summit, he stated that the Ukrainian president was not invited to the event because resolving the conflict with Russia is not one of the topics to be discussed by the G20. According to the ambassador, the Ukrainian has also not participated in the bloc’s meetings since the war began.
He also said that the G20 is not the appropriate place to discuss the issue as Brazil does not want the bloc to take the place of the UN (United Nations) or its Security Council.
Mercosur-European Union Agreement
According to Itamaraty, negotiations to finalize the agreement should not advance at the G20, but continue to aim to seal a consequential textI still hope until the end of the year.
“Regarding European Mercosur, the idea is not, negotiations are progressing well, but the idea is not to do something about it at the top of the events, but the objective remains to seek to conclude negotiations by the end of the year. We will have other opportunities, then, until the end of the year”said the ambassador.
