One of the most prestigious coaches on the planet, Spanish Pep Guardiola is on the agenda at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). According to a report on the website The Athletic, the organization is trying hard to convince the Manchester City Spaniard to lead Brazil. The 53-year-old coach has already declared himself a fan of the national team and is in an impasse over renewing his contract with the English club.
According to the publication, Guardiola has the desire to coach a national team and would like to take on a job with a view to the 2030 World Cup. He was even approached to lead England, but showed no enthusiasm for the project. The English Football Association (FA) ended up signing Thomas Tuchel, formerly of Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
The report also states that the CBF is making a “great move” to have Guardiola head the Brazilian team, calling the Spaniard several times throughout 2024. In January, after the Federal Supreme Court (STF) reappointed Ednaldo Rodrigues to the presidency of the entity, Dorival Júnior was hired for the position, ending the federation’s dream of having Carlo Ancelotti in charge of Brazil – the Italian says he does not regret having refused the offer.
Guardiola only has a contract with Manchester City until June 2025. The English team is suffering from losses caused by injuries. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is no longer playing this season. The team comes from three consecutive defeats, with the highlight being the 4-1 defeat suffered by Sporting in the Champions League.
The bad phase raised the possibility of Guardiola ending his successful cycle at City, with 18 trophies in eight years. The Athletic’s report, however, states that the current trend is for the coach to renew for another season before finally realizing his dream of coaching a national team.
“Guardiola was reportedly irritated when the CBF distanced itself from signing him after his time at Barcelona, but sources close to him say he likes the idea of coaching Brazil,” says an excerpt from the report.
Under Dorival’s command, the team is preparing to face Venezuela on November 14th, and Uruguay, on the 19th, in the World Cup qualifiers. After a poor start in the race for a place in the 2026 World Cup, Brazil comes from two victories in the last FIFA Data and rose to 4th place, with 16 points. Argentina, current champion of the World and Copa América, is the leader, with 22.
