Carlo Ancelotti surprised this Friday by answering one of the journalists’ questions at Real Madrid’s traditional press conference on the eve of the Spanish Championship round. When asked if he regretted rejecting the invitation to coach the Brazilian team, the Italian coach was ironic: “You make me laugh.”
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to laugh,” said the Real coach, visibly embarrassed after a nervous laugh. “This is not the time to laugh because it is a delicate moment. And we have to move on. So, laughing today is not the most appropriate. Now is the time to act.”
Ancelotti was referring to Real’s recent run of games in the European season. The Madrid club is coming off two painful defeats in recent days. In the middle of the week, they beat Milan 3-1 in the Champions League, a competition in which Real is not in the direct qualifying zone for the knockout stage. Previously, Ancelotti’s team beat arch-rivals Barcelona 4-0, who lead Espanyol by nine points.
The negative moment generated the question about Ancelotti’s possible regret, who is already suffering criticism from fans and the local press, for saying “no” to the CBF proposal made in the first half of the year. He received an offer to take charge of the Brazilian national team from the middle of this year, when his contract with Real ended. The Italian, however, decided to accept the proposal to renew his relationship with the club.
“I don’t regret anything. And I continue to enjoy every day I spend here in Valdebebas (Real’s CT location). And I will do this until the last day. I am grateful for the time I spent and will spend here. This is a difficult time, but I’m happy to be here, at this club, which is the best in the world. And it’s also the best in the world at getting out of difficult moments quickly”, he commented.
Real’s recent poor results add to the disappointment with the poor performance of Kylian Mbappé, the club’s big bet in the last transfer window. At the same time, the club still resents the Ballon d’Or award decision, when its players, mainly Vinícius Júnior, were passed over for the main award. Rodri, from Manchester City, took the honor, with the Brazilian in second place and Bellingham in third.
