Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) appealed to Brazilian lawyers not to vote for candidates linked to the left in the elections for the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) sections. “See who is linked to the left and don’t vote for them. See what the other candidate’s proposal is,” said Bolsonaro in an interview with AuriVerdeon Wednesday morning (6). The elections for the OAB sections in the states and the Federal District are scheduled for the second half of November this year, with specific dates defined by each of them.
The former president commented on the cases of prisoners after the acts of January 8, saying that “legal process does not exist in Brazil”, when he mentioned the elections that will take place in the second half of November. For Bolsonaro, lawyers are being discredited. “There is no point in due process. It does not have. You have to have friendships. Law is losing its essence in Brazil,” he said.
Bolsonaro said he did not nominate specific candidates, stating that the lawyers themselves know their peers best. “I’m not going to recommend anyone to you. I’m not a lawyer. I’ve already spoken to some candidates. Some took a photo with me, that’s fine. I didn’t record with anyone specifically, but you know who the candidates are better than me. Vote correctly”, emphasized the former president.
Bolsonaro’s appeal was also justified by the OAB’s way of acting in cases such as the one involving one of its lawyers. “I had my lawyer, suffering search and seizure in the middle of the night. OAB had to get in there. The lawyer cannot suffer this without anyone accompanying him. It’s the law that there has to be someone from the Order [dos Advogados do Brasil] accompanying you when you go to search and seize a lawyer. They ignore that,” said the former president.
Bolsonaro also recalled that the OAB Nacional will also have elections soon. “It is the sections that will elect the president of the OAB [Nacional]. Who is the president of the OAB now, at the moment, my God? What does he do? Who is he aligned with?” asked Bolsonaro. The term of office of the current president of the OAB, Beto Simonetti, ends in 2025.
