Statement by the vice-president of the STF at an event about the Mercosur Permanent Review Court; Rosa Weber was also present
The vice-president of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Edson Fachin, participated this Friday (8.Nov.2024) in the opening of an event on Mercosur and defended that there be “resilience” against a “wave of authoritarian populism rising”.
According to the minister, it is necessary to have a “firm position” so as not to “compromise with threats to democracy”preserving harmony between Powers and respect for institutions.
“Nevertheless, let us pay attention to the current scenario. Freedom and democracy are conditions of possibility for a livable future. A wave of authoritarian populism rises. A new virus spreads and contaminates justice systems. The vaccine challenges the tempering of the courts. Comply with resilience and democratic vigil”stated Fachin during his speech.
The STF held the international seminar “The Permanent Court of Review of Mercosul: relevance and perspectives”, which in addition to having ministers, also had the presence of retired minister Rosa Weber, who today presides over the TPR (Permanent Court of Review) of Mercosul .
During the event, Fachin also defended the exchange of academic and legal experience between the bloc’s countries.
We must think of an applied legal type of ‘Mercosulist dogmatics’, capable of fostering studies and debates, within the bloc, on constitutional-international doctrine, on international norms and on decisions”, declared the minister. “More academic and institutional exchanges are encouraged so that the constitutional canons of each member are known in the region”.
