The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL)stated, this Friday (8), that, to face the challenges discussed by nations at a global level, it is essential to reform governance institutions.
“To this end, the reform of the UN [Organização das Nações Unidas]in particular its Security Council, is crucial for sustaining international peace and security and promoting fair and inclusive sustainable development,” said Lira.

The President of the Chamber opened the 3rd work session.
“In the same way, institutions of the international financial system, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, must improve their decision-making process and engage in confronting inequality and the transition towards sustainability, directing their financing mechanisms to promote social and economic, with environmental commitment and attention to imbalances and national contexts”, added the deputy.
Lira also defended the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the strengthening of the multilateral trade system, greater participation of women in international trade and the approach to sustainable development in regional trade agreements. According to him, the role of Parliaments is crucial in these movements.

“Ladies and gentlemen heads of delegation, fellow parliamentarians:
The international system faces a multifaceted crisis in the geopolitical, economic and environmental spheres.
To face systemic challenges effectively and productively, it is essential to reform global governance institutions and mechanisms, increasing their representativeness, legitimacy and functionality.

In this regard, the reform of the UN, and in particular that of its Security Council, is crucial for sustaining international peace and security and for promoting sustainable, fair and inclusive development.
Likewise, institutions of the international financial system, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, must improve their decision-making process and engage in confronting inequalities and the transition towards sustainability, directing financing mechanisms to promote social and economic advances with environmental commitment and attention to national imbalances and contexts.
The relationship between trade and sustainable development, the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the strengthening of the multilateral trade system, sustainable development in investment agreements, the participation of women in international trade and the approach to sustainable development in agreements regional trade, are some of the issues being debated to improve the governance of international trade, so that it is more open, fair and sustainable.

For all these reasons, we need to discuss the crucial role of Parliaments in this movement, whether in participation in international organizations, in the debate and approval of international agreements and in the harmonization of public policies at the national level.“
