The president of the Chamber, (-AL), defended reforms of international organizations such as the UN Security Council (United Nations), the IMF (International Monetary Fund), the World Bank and the WTO (World Trade Organization).
In his speech at the opening of the meeting of the presidents of parliaments of the countries of the Chamber, Lira stated that the international system “faces a multifaceted crisis in the geopolitical, economic and environmental spheres”.
He defended the need to reform global governance institutions and mechanisms, “increasing their representativeness, legitimacy and functionality”.
“In this regard, the reform of the UN, and in particular that of its Security Council, is crucial for sustaining international peace and security and for promoting sustainable, fair and inclusive development,” Lira said this Friday.
The parliamentarian’s statement is similar to the speech of the president (PT), an institution whose expansion Brazil has been defending for years.
Also this Friday, Lira named institutions of the international financial system, such as the IMF and the World Bank, stating that they must “improve their decision-making process and engage in confronting inequalities and the transition towards sustainability”.
“Directing financing mechanisms to promote social and economic advances with environmental commitment and attention to national imbalances and contexts,” he said.
In her closing speech, Lira spoke again about international institutions, saying that it is “inevitable that we deal with the reform of global governance”.
“If we want global challenges to be adequately debated and resolved, if we want international institutions to be respected and their decisions accepted, it is inevitable that we address the reform of global governance. We want more transparent and representative international institutions.”
