The United States has the custom of inviting heads of diplomatic missions in the country, and not foreign leaders
The president (PT) should not go to the inauguration of the United States president, Donald Trump (Republican), on January 20, 2025. The reason has to do with a North American tradition of inviting the heads of countries’ diplomatic missions to Washington DC to the event, and not foreign leaders.
In January 2009, when Barack Obama took office for his 1st term, the US heads of states. At the time, Lula was in his 2nd term. The two met for the first time in March 2009, during the PT member’s visit to Washington DC
Trump won the race against the vice president and Democratic Party candidate, Kamala Harris. At 11:34 am on November 8, the Republican had 295 delegates against 226 for his opponent – at least 270 are needed. The winner in the states of Nevada and Arizona still remains to be determined. Trump leads in both.
Lula posted on his social media profiles on the morning of November 6th. He congratulated Trump, stated that the “democracy is the voice of the people”that the world “needs dialogue” and wished “sort e success” to the Republican government.
It was a message in a milder tone compared to what . At the time, Lula was giving an interview to the French TV channel TF1. He had stated that:
- I couldn’t give a guess about the elections, but I was rooting for Kamala’s victory;
- suggested that Trump’s eventual return to the White House would be the “fascism and Nazism working again with a different face”.
