Scholz emphasizes the need to ensure the security of Europe.
European leaders will work with the US president even after Joe Biden is replaced by Donald Trump, while the European Union must remain strong in light of ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. This was announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz before the start of Friday’s informal meeting of the European Council in Budapest. The Reuters agency informs about it, writes the TASR special correspondent.
“We will also cooperate with the future American president. How to achieve this good cooperation will be the subject of our discussion,” declared Scholz, who will meet with other EU leaders in Budapest. He was reacting to the re-election of Donald Trump as US president.
“One question is quite clear. Together as the European Union, as Europeans, we must do what is necessary for our security,” the German chancellor declared.
Trump demanded that Europe’s NATO allies invest more in defense
During his first term, Trump demanded that European NATO allies spend more on defense – at least two percent of gross domestic product – and rely less on the US for defense.
The re-election of Trump was one of the main topics of Thursday’s summit of the European Political Community, which was also held in the Hungarian capital. It was attended by 42 heads of state and government, including the Prime Minister of the SR Robert Fico, as well as EU and NATO leaders.
The German chancellor did not attend the EPC summit on Thursday due to the ongoing government crisis in Germany.
