Robert Fico said Slovakia will oppose the EU taking full financial responsibility for Ukraine if the US under Trump cuts or ends its aid.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called for a change in the European strategy in relation to Ukraine on Thursday at the European Union leaders’ dinner in Budapest. According to representatives of other member countries, the current strategy is working, a high-ranking EU official told Reuters, reports TASR.
However, the other leaders of the Union countries are also aware that after Donald Trump takes office as US president in January of next year, there could be a significant reduction or a complete stop of US aid to Kyiv. They therefore discussed the possibilities of how they should react in such a case, officials said.
Fico about money and other problems
In a video released after the European Political Community (EPC) summit, Fico said Slovakia would oppose the EU taking full financial responsibility for Ukraine if the US under Trump cuts or ends its aid.
He added that in the near future, the Union must begin to finance more measures designed to combat illegal migration. “I emphasized that if we are to have money for Ukraine, we must also have money for problems that threaten the EU significantly more,” said Fico.
The need for a new strategy in relation to Ukraine was pointed out by Viktor Orbán before the start of the summit in Budapest. “The victory of the Republicans was born in America, which for us European leaders raises the question of whether Europe itself will be able to maintain military and financial support for Ukraine. There are serious doubts about this, so a new European strategy will be needed,” he specified.
