Meeting virtually this Wednesday (6), Public Security secretaries from the 27 units of the Federation approved a motion in support of projects that tighten criminal laws and were presented in March by governors of the South and Southeast.
The projects foresee restricting the release of dangerous prisoners in custody hearings, giving more autonomy to police officers to carry out approaches, allowing electronic monitoring without judicial authorization and creating the
“These projects are very effective in quickly reducing crime in Brazil”, said the Secretary of Security of Rio Grande do Sul, Sandro Caron.
The security area was also discussed at the Consesp (National Council of Public Security Secretaries) meeting, which was presented at a meeting with the governors.
There were no definitive conclusions about it, but rather a call for the secretaries to present observations and proposals at a new meeting scheduled for the beginning of December.
Speaking personally, the Rio Grande do Sul secretary has some reservations about the Ministry of Justice’s proposal, which increases the role of the federal government in the matter.
“First, we have to be careful that there is no interference by the federal government in the states’ security policy. The federative pact must be respected,” he declared.
Another critical point, according to him, concerns the objective of increasing the powers of the Federal and Federal Highway Police. “We have to assess whether these institutions have enough staff to meet these new demands”, he declared.
Furthermore, the secretary argues that the federal plan pays more attention to border control. “There is an urgent need for more effective control. From what we saw, this is not included in the text”, he stated.
Rio Grande do Sul, says the secretary, should close the year 2024 with the lowest indicators in the current historical series.
“Last year had already been the safest we have ever had, and we had significant reductions in all the main indicators, such as homicide, robbery, feminicide, pedestrian robbery and vehicle theft”, he stated.
