UFC president Dana White compared a Brazilian fighter to mixed martial arts star Anderson Silva. Carlos Prates, 31, competes in the welterweight division and has been attracting attention from those who follow fighting championships. The Brazilian will face American Neil Magny this Saturday (9) night, in the main fight of UFC Vegas 100.
In the octagon of UFC APEX, in Las Vegas, at 9 pm, “The Nightmare”, a nickname given to Carlos that means nightmare, will star in the most important fight of the championship, in his fourth appearance in the UFC. There have been three wins so far, since his debut against Trevin Giles in February. On that occasion, the fighter won by knockout in the second round.
The first victory was followed by the defeat of Charles Radtke, and Li Jingliang, at UFC 305. With that, there are 20 wins and 6 losses, being one triumph away from entering the Top 10 ranking in the category.
The promise of Brazilian fighting came from Taubaté, in the interior of São Paulo, and began practicing martial arts as a teenager, at 15 years old. At the time, Carlos Alberto Prates was doing Muay Thai.
Over the years, he began to compete in tournaments in Brazil, especially in striking, which led him to live in Thailand to improve his fighting. Currently, with a 12-year MMA career, he returned to training in Taubaté, having arrived at the UFC just under a year ago.
The path to the UFC began with an invitation to join the seventh season of Dana White’s Contender Series, after six consecutive victories in professional fights by the Brazilian. On the reality show, Carlos beat Mitch Ramirez by technical knockout in the second round, and caught Dana’s attention.
Another similarity between Nightmare and Spider is their specialty – both in kickboxing. Carlos is also a black belt in jiu-jitsu, with varied skills.
