The Chilean court revoked this Monday (4) the preventive detention of former player Jorge Valdivia, 41, accused of rape.
The decision was taken by the Court of Appeals of Santiago, which decreed the freedom of the former Chilean national team athlete and imposed precautionary measures of nighttime house arrest, prohibition of leaving the country and prohibition of approaching the victim, according to the Public Ministry .
Valdivia was arrested on October 22, accused of rape by a woman whose identity is kept confidential. She said the former player abused her after they had been drinking at a Peruvian restaurant.
In a statement, he “categorically denied having sexually assaulted anyone” and said he had “a consensual relationship with an adult woman.”
After the first accusation, a second woman also accused him of rape.
“An immediate order of release was given,” said Valdivia’s lawyer, Paula Vial, after the Court’s decision.
“Mago” Valdivia was a member of the Golden generation that led Chile to win the 2015 Copa América. He also played in the World Cup in South Africa, in 2010, and Brazil, in 2014.
He stood out as a midfielder at Colo-Colo and arrived in Brazil, standing out at Palmeiras. He also defended Al Ain and Al Wahda, from the United Arab Emirates; Monarcas, Mazatlán and Necaxa, from Mexico; and Rayo Vallecano, from Spain, among others.
Valdivia’s release comes on the same day that another historic Chilean player, midfielder Arturo Vidal, and other Colo-Colo players were reported for sexual assault.
Last May, nine youth players from the Chilean club Cobreloa were accused of participating in the group rape of a young girl in 2021. In July, Cobreloa announced that two young men were also accused of raping a young girl in Santiago.
