Minister Sebastião Reis, from the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), participates in a debate, this Thursday (7), mediated by his wife, Anna Maria da Trindade dos Reis, a lawyer who works in several cases at the Citizenship Court. Criminalist Thiago Turbay, from Brasília, is also a mediator.
They welcome jurist Jordi Ferrer Beltrán, from the University of Girona, in Spain, who, the following day, participates in the creation of the .
In 2020, Sebastião was honored at the STJ with a book by several authors on evidence and criminal proceedings, a subject in which he specializes.
Anna Maria is a renowned lawyer, president of the Center for the Study of Law Firms (CESA) in the Federal District; Thiago is a criminalist, with a master’s degree from UnivGirona, and a member of IBDRP.
In 2016, a report from Sheet about STJ ministers with relatives advocating in court revealed that Anna Maria had power of attorney in 1,166 cases.
The minister informed, at the time, that he registered impediment in all of his wife’s processes.
This Thursday’s debate refers to a similar episode, which occurred in 2020, involving members of the STJ.
That year, the minister made a video about “You have the body of the Superior Courts“, in which lawyer Anna Carolina Noronha, his daughter, participated.
As this blog recorded, Anna Carolina and her brother, lawyer Otávio Henrique Menezes de Noronha, defended the interests of clients with cases at the STJ. According to a retired minister, his daughter’s presence in the debate could suggest attracting clientele.
The event was promoted by the IGP (Institute of Penal Guarantees), a group created in 2009, in Brasília, to encourage respect for constitutional guarantees.
The program was led by lawyer Ticiano Figueiredo, president of the IGP. Conrado Donati and Marcelo Turbay, directors of the institute, also participated.

When consulted through the STJ press office, the minister did not want to comment on the debate that was mediated by his wife.
