Eris was president of the Central Bank in the early 1990s and participated in the creation of one of the most controversial economic packages carried out in Brazil

Economist Ibrahim Eris (80 years old) died this Friday (8.Nov.2024). The information was confirmed by Poder360 next to , an institution that Eris presided over in the early 1990s.

Ibrahim was born in Türkiye and immigrated to Brazil in 1973. He became a professor at the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting at the University of São Paulo. He also served as vice president of the (Economic Research Institute).

It was as a member of the economic team of the former president and president of the Central Bank for 1 year and 2 months that Ibrahim stood out. He was one of those responsible for announcing the Collor Plan, which ended up becoming one of the most controversial economic packages in the country, due to the confiscation of savings.

Eris also worked in the private sector as financial director of the São Paulo Jockey Club.

In a statement, the Central Bank lamented the death of Ibrahim Eris:

“The Board of Directors of the Central Bank received with regret the news of the death of economist Ibrahim Eris. Former president of the Central Bank between March 1990 and May 1991, Eris spared no effort in ensuring Brazilian society had a stable economy with controlled inflation. Wherever she went, Eris left her mark of high professionalism and commitment to what she did. The Board of Directors of the Central Bank extends its condolences to Eris’ family, friends and co-workers in this moment of pain.”
