Problems in the economy, immigration and wars during the Democrat’s government were central themes for voters
To vice-president of the United States, (Democratic Party), by not disassociating itself from the government of Democratic President Joe Biden, may have undermined its chances of victory in Tuesday’s election (5.Nov.2024), according to experts.
Even with a close race against the former president (Republican Party), the Democrat was far from obtaining the necessary number of delegates in the Electoral College, raising questions about the negative impact of her association with the current government.
Kamala lost at 5 swing states where the result has already been announced. Nevada and Arizona, which continue with the investigation, must confirm Trump’s 100% success in the swing states, which decided the election.
Experts point out that Kamala’s defeat by this unexpected margin can be attributed to a series of negative factors attributed to Biden’s administration, integrated by the Democratic candidate.
For professor Murilo Borsio Battle, PhD in Law from UnB (University of Brasília)persistent inflation and the Biden administration’s unsatisfactory performance negatively affected the vice president’s image.
“A major concern of the American electorate is the economic issue. The country lived for several years with high inflation and a high cost of living. This factor was decisive, as the Biden government did not perform well in this aspect”said Bataglia in an interview with Poder360.
On October 6th, an interview with the North American program “The View”, and ABCHarris said that “there was nothing that came to mind” when asked what she would have done differently than Biden if she had been at the top of the ticket in 2020.
In response, Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance on your X profile (ex-Twitter), “Kamala Harris is more of the same. She herself admits”.
Other themes that weighed in the election were:
- immigration: according to Murilo Bataglia, the government did not implement effective measures to control the increase in immigration, especially from Central America;
- ideological change of Latinos: “The growing support of certain Latino groups for Trump, due to a wave of conservatism, also weighed in”said the teacher;
- wars and foreign policy: the outbreak of conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and the lack of a definitive resolution proposed by the US tarnished the image of the Biden-Kamala duo.
Kamala officially took over as head of the Democratic presidential ticket on August 19th. The short campaign time was another determining factor, according to the expert.
“The fact that Kamala took on the candidacy in the middle of the campaign, without having enough time to develop strategies from the beginning, may also have affected her election”said Bataglia.
Kamala’s defeat is not related to the perception of possible fragility of its image, evaluates Social Sciences professor José Vitor Pires Tupiná, specialized in Political Science. For him, the lack of popular support was a relevant factor. “Many voters questioned what concrete Biden did to guarantee their vote for Kamala, considering the wear and tear accumulated during his government”said in an interview with Poder360.
For Tupiná, on the Republican side, Trump benefited from his strong presence on social media, amplified by the support of influential figures such as Elon Musk and American comedian Joe Rogan. Furthermore, the president-elect presented an image of resistance, especially after on July 13th.
“Although immigration was an important issue, the issue that stood out most was the perception that the nationalist and anti-immigration movement had gained strength, favoring Trump”, explained the expert.
“In the current context, no Democrat would surpass Donald Trump. Maybe just Barack Obama, but even so, it’s uncertain.”he concluded.
