President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) authorized the use of the Armed Forces to Guarantee Law and Order (GLO) between the 14th and 21st of November. The period covers the days of the event.
The measure was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) this Friday (8).
According to the federal government, the use of the Armed Forces will be coordinated with public security bodies in Rio de Janeiro. Actions must follow the Integrated Strategic Security Plan for the G20 Leaders Summit.
In a statement, Palácio do Planalto said that the use of the Armed Forces will be important for the “protection of delegations, ensuring that Brazil offers a safe environment for everyone involved”.
According to the federal government, in addition to the delegations of the 21 summit members, another 56 delegations are expected to participate in the event. Among those confirmed, there are 40 heads of state and government or top leaders of international organizations.

The amount will be used to feed 7,000 soldiers, transport teams and fuel. Of this budget, R$625,000 is already being invested in the maintenance of motorcycles that will be used for escorts and patrolling.
The Army plans to use helicopters, drones, escort motorcycles, armored vehicles, communications equipment, toxic agent detection equipment, among others.
All 7,000 soldiers are part of the Eastern Military Command (CML), which covers troops from Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santos and Minas Gerais.
