The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) admitted, , that he should be a candidate for re-election in 2026 if there is no other name to face the extreme right.
“I will leave 2026 to think about 2026. There are several parties that support me, I will discuss this very soberly, very seriously”, said Lula when asked if he will be a candidate again in two years, despite his age. He is currently 79 years old.
“So, if the time comes and the parties understand that there is no other candidate to face a person on the extreme right, who is a denialist, who does not believe in medicine, who does not believe in science, obviously I will be ready to face it”, added Lula.

The interview with the anchor CNN International was recorded the day before, via videoconference, from Palácio do Planalto.
Lula has avoided stating that he will be a candidate for re-election in 2026. In 2022, when he stood up for that year’s election, he said that he intended to serve just one term to recover the country after the former president’s government. Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The PT member intended, in these first four years, to develop a successor, but so far this has not clearly happened.

“I believe that President Trump has to think like an inhabitant of planet Earth. And as the commander of the most important and richest country in the world, which has the greatest technology and is best prepared from a military point of view”, added Lula.
