Political scientist Cristiano Noronha, from Arko Advice, stated during his participation in the program WW this Friday (8) that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is the strongest candidate from the left camp for the 2026 presidential elections.
According to Noronha, “there is no one on the left who has the level of voting intention that Lula has”.
The expert highlighted that, despite rumors about the president’s possible resistance to running again, the signals given by Lula clearly indicate his desire to seek another term.
Advantages of the current position
Noronha highlighted that Lula, as he is in office, naturally becomes the most viable candidate to run for re-election.
Furthermore, the political scientist noted that the president has more instruments to attract support from parties such as MDB and PSD, citing the distribution of positions and participation in the federal government as possible bargaining chips.
The analyst also commented on the internal divisions in these parties, mentioning that some leaders, such as the mayors of Porto Alegre and São Paulo, defend different paths.
However, Noronha highlighted that the MDB is already “planted in the government” and that nothing prevents these associations from choosing to support Lula.
Evolving political landscape
Cristiano Noronha also recalled that, in the last election, the PSD tried to launch Rodrigo Pacheco as a candidate, but was unsuccessful due to differences within the party’s base. This situation illustrates the complexity of political alliances and the importance of negotiations for the formation of coalitions.
Finally, the political scientist highlighted that, even if these parties decide to support Lula, they maintain a strategy of flexibility.
According to Noronha, if the current president is not re-elected, these associations could easily reposition themselves and be part of the new government “without any problems”.
