Sensible and calm, Renato Gaúcho explained the wrong strategy and Grêmio’s bad match against Palmeiras, on Friday night (8), at Allianz Parque, in the 33rd round of Series A of the Brazilian Championship.
With a dejected expression due to , the coach said that initially the idea was to ‘know how to suffer’ and when he thought about attacking, he ended up being punished with the rival’s goal.
“We knew that Palmeiras would put a lot of pressure on, because of what they need in the Brazilian Championship. We were waiting for the right time to counterattack. When we started trying to put the team forward, we ended up conceding the goal at this point”, he lamented.
Renato completed by explaining why he kept the team that drew with Fluminense last week in Rio de Janeiro. In that match, the coach analyzed the performance as positive.
“Depending on the opponent and what they need, each game we will put a team on the field. Against Fluminense we played like that. We played a good game and got a good result. There are times when you have to know how to suffer. This time the scheme didn’t work, but I’ve already spoken to my group. We’re going to face Juventude at home and we’re going to change the way we play. Needing to win, we will certainly be more offensive”, he concluded.
Asked about Palmeiras’ dominance and intensity, much greater than Tricolor’s in the 90 minutes, Renato found reasons for the difference in attitude.
“There are times when Palmeiras, for example, which has a lot of quality, used to playing on synthetic grass, there are times when they have to know how to suffer. It’s very easy to fight for the title. Play lighter, freer and looser. We always have a lot of pressure. What makes the difference? Enter with confidence to play. We need to improve, we know that”, he analyzed.
Substitutions after the goal
Another point in the interview in which Renato was questioned was the delay in changing the team, which had already been dominated since the first half. At 18 in the second half he made two changes and the last three after the goal.
“The coin has two sides. It could be dangerous because it would open up my team. Of course, Palmeiras would take more care. A point was a good size for Grêmio. For them, all they care about is winning. They played much more than us, created much more and Marchesín was having a happy night. We were suffering. The moment I thought about moving forward, the team scored. Palmeiras held back because they had scored the goal”, he commented.
With the setback, Grêmio is left with 39 points and remains close to Z4 in Série A. Tricolor returns to the field on the 20th, at Arena do Grêmio, in Porto Alegre, against Juventude, at 7pm (Brasília time).
