Increase of 33.9% compared to the previous year signals recovery in the sector, with emphasis on clothing and food

São Paulo’s retail sector is expected to create 30,000 formal jobs in the last quarter of 2024. The (Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo) released the estimate on Thursday (7.Nov.2024). The number represents an increase of 33.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, when approximately 22,400 new vacancies were registered.

The expectation is similar to the results of 2022, when retail created 33,500 jobs. FecomercioSP identifies this data as signs of a more heated job market for the sector at the end of the year, compared to 2023.

The 13th salary and end-of-year festivities – such as Black Friday, Christmas and New Year’s Eve – dictate the increase in consumption in the 4th quarter. Therefore, FecomercioSP projects that 75% of new vacancies will be made available in November, prior to the payment of the 1st installment of the 13th. The most demanded roles include attendants, salespeople, cashiers, merchandise replenishers and packers. Furthermore, around 20% of the vacancies foreseen for this period may become effective at the beginning of 2025.

The FecomercioSP study indicates that 40% of the expected jobs will come from the clothing, accessories, footwear and travel items segments. Food products, especially markets, will account for 35% of new positions. The remaining 25% will be distributed among other sectors, such as cosmetics stores, perfumeries and household appliances.
