Our societies are built on silences and taboo words. And not only with respect to who we are and the identities that we want to attribute to ourselves, it is also built with the realities that we prefer not to admit, but with which we live every day. We have met Débora, Antonia, Fernando, Montserrat, Mimma or Michele. But this story, in reality, belongs to no one. It is a story that affects us all and has a single protagonist: .
in the province of Cádiz, and Gioia Tauro, in the Italian region of Calabria, are coastal towns in southern Europe, greatly affected by unemployment, lack of public investment and institutional abandonment. But what unites them mainly is what causes tension, averted glances, canceled interviews and unanswered calls. 80% of what is consumed in Europe arrives from Morocco through Spanish coasts such as those of Barbate. The port of Gioia Tauro is the main entry point for cocaine into Italy: in 2021, 97% of all cocaine confiscated in that country was seized there.
The journalists and , from , and the Italian journalist, from , guide us through the streets of Barbate and Gioia Tauro to make us participate in the reality in which its inhabitants live together who, 1,941 kilometers away, share large unemployment figures, complaints against institutions, problems associated with drug trafficking and silence. But also, the dignity of neighbors who fight to recover peace and make their land a better place. This is the story of two people who stand up and say enough is enough to confront drug trafficking. A story of silences, dignity and contained rage.
