The fall of the Berlin Wall was an example of European cohesion and “the culmination of pan-European development”. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his video commemorating the 35th anniversary of this historic event.
The DPA agency, from which TASR received the report, emphasized that Scholz called for solidarity in his post, especially in the context of the current global political situation. “Our common history from the fall of 1989 shows us how we will achieve our goals: when we stand together, together for peace and freedom, for security and prosperity, the rule of law and democracy,” said the chancellor.
According to Scholz, this unity was also strengthened by the Friday meeting of European leaders in Budapest, which he personally attended. At the same time, he pointed out that the neighboring states in Central and Eastern Europe also contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall. “There were brave trade unionists from the Solidarity movement in Poland. Singing revolutionaries in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Brave women and men in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and other countries. And of course the participants of Monday’s demonstration in Leipzig and other places of the former East Germany, who held hands,” declared the chancellor. “The victory of freedom in the fall of 1989 was a pan-European victory.”
