Indonesia’s Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia erupted again on Saturday, spewing a column of volcanic ash up to nine kilometers high just a few days after its eruption claimed nine lives and evacuated thousands of residents. This was reported by the AFP agency, from which TASR took over the report.
On Thursday, the volcano erupted eight times. Local authorities raised the alert level to the highest level.
Approximately 5,816 people out of more than 16,000 inhabitants living in areas near the volcano had to be evacuated to other villages, the spokesman of the regional government informed.
Volcanic eruptions are frequent in Indonesia, the archipelago lies in an area with high seismic activity, also known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are approximately 130 active volcanoes on its territory.
