I regret that in Slovakia we are building imaginary walls ourselves, although nobody and nothing is forcing us to do so. This was announced by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He reminded that there is no higher power that would demand the division of the Slovak nation, according to him, it is only about the responsibility of the nation.
“The Berlin Wall was created as a result of the Cold War, which divided the whole world. As a result of a superpower conflict that fell on one particular nation and forced it to split into two irreconcilable worlds. I’m sorry that we ourselves are building such a wall in Slovakia, although nobody and nothing is forcing us to do it,” stated Pellegrini in a video on the social network.
He called the Berlin Wall the greatest symbol of the division of the world, Europe and the nation. Hundreds of people lost their lives near it and thousands ended up in prison for trying to cross it. And that’s only because they refused to live in unfreedom and wanted to decide their own destiny. However, in many cases, according to him, it was only because they wanted to fall into the arms of their loved ones, who were separated from them by this wall for decades.
“At this mental wall of ours, so far, thank God, people are not dying. But there is the hope that we will share a more peaceful and better future together as one nation.” noted Pellegrini.
According to the president, everyone who will “completely needlessly” support or spread hatred against their neighbors should remember the Berlin Wall. According to him, it is as if he himself decides to voluntarily contribute his own brick or piece of barbed wire to what divides us as a society. “Then let them realize what all the people in the not-so-distant world had to do for decades in order to finally get rid of such a dividing wall,” Pellegrini said.
