President of the Foreign Relations and National Defense Commission, the senator (MDB-AL) disagrees with the assessment that the election represents us and believes that we need to wait and see if he will take campaign promises from paper.

The Republican defeated the Democrat and returned to the American Presidency with , when .

For Renan, it is necessary to wait for the beginning of the Republican’s administration to see whether the campaign promises, “some of which are worrying”, will be converted into government policies.

“Everyone knows the tone of the campaigns and the realities of government”, says the senator. He cites, for example, the promise to tax imported products between 10 and 20%. “This protectionism implies losses for our trade balance on several items, since the USA is our second largest trading partner, behind China.”

Renan also cites issues in global geopolitics that could impact the diplomatic relationship between Brazil and the United States, such as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, the environmental agenda, the elections in Venezuela —not recognized by Brazil— and the strengthening of representative democracy .

“I do not agree with the principle that Trump’s election, although ultra-right, represents a risk to global democracy”, he highlights. “I also can’t see how the election of the Republican has any kind of interference, for better or worse, in us. There is a certain paranoia on one side and cheerleading on the other, but they are not supported by tangible facts.”
