Heracleum mantegazzianum (Heracleum mantegazzianum)
It is a plant from the family of sedges, which was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant. Unfortunately, it spread very quickly and today represents one of the most dangerous invasive plants on our continent. It grows up to 5 m in height, has pinnate leaves and blooms with large white flowers that form rich clusters. The plant reproduces by seeds, which have a germination period of up to several years. A single plant produces up to several tens of thousands of seeds, which are spread over long distances by wind or water.
Why the bolshevik is dangerous
The danger of the hogweed lies in its juice, which contains phototoxic furanocoumarins. In contact with the skin and subsequent exposure to sunlight, these substances cause severe photodermatitis. Manifestations can appear up to several hours after mutual contact.
What specific health risks are there?
As soon as you touch the plant, the flea beetle will cause unwanted reddening of your skin and burns with painful blisters. Likewise, permanent pigment spots, eye inflammation and, in extreme cases, can threaten sight with blindness.
Where the bolshevik thrives
The plant prefers moist places, along watercourses, on the edges of forests and fields, but it can also grow on wastelands. It can be found almost everywhere in the Czech Republic, but it is most widespread in the regions of western Bohemia.
How to protect yourself from a bolshevik
Prevention is always best, so learn how to distinguish the spectacular holly from similar plants, such as the common holly, which is much less dangerous. If you encounter it, avoid any direct contact. If you discover the plant on your property, report it to the appropriate authority or non-profit organization dealing with nature conservation. The elimination of bolševnik is difficult and should be carried out by experts.
What to do in case of contact with a bolshevik
Always wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water immediately and seek medical attention. Avoid sunlight for at least 48 hours and follow the guidelines recommended by your doctor.
