Allegations of physical attacks on far-right groups in Germany and Hungary.
German prosecutors on Saturday announced the arrest of a left-wing extremist wanted by police for several years on charges of physical attacks on members of far-right groups in Germany and Hungary. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.
German citizen Johann G., who was detained on a train in the east of the country, is suspected of being a member of a group led by a student from Leipzig, Lina E. She and three other activists were convicted last year of attacks against neo-Nazis.
He is suspected of being a member of a criminal organization and committing attacks in Germany
The federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement that Johann G. is reasonably suspected of participating in a criminal organization and committing attacks in Germany in 2019 and 2020 that resulted in serious bodily harm, property damage and document forgery.
Germany’s interior ministry said it congratulated the police on a “great success”. “Left-wing extremist groups pose a significant threat. The threshold of inhibition against attacks on political opponents with great brutality has been lowered,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
Johann G. is also accused of participating in attacks during a far-right rally in Budapest in February 2023, which was attended by neo-Nazi militants from all over Europe.
Lina E., who was sentenced to more than five years in prison in May 2023 for attacks on neo-Nazis, has become a symbol for far-left activists. Calls for her release often appeared at their gatherings.
