Despite striker Alerrandro opening the scoring for Vitória at Barradão, the red-black team saw Corinthians draw and turn the match around this Saturday (9). On the field, Leão fans could see a team presenting a performance below that seen in the last rounds. The many passing errors and decision-making were defined by coach Thiago Carpini as a lack of tranquility and efficiency.
In a press conference after the match, Leão’s coach regretted the mistakes made by the team, especially after striker Alerrandro opened the scoring at Barradão. The move took place eight minutes into the game, after goalkeeper Hugo Souza failed and delivered the ball to the red-black player’s feet. In the coach’s view, the performance shown left something to be desired.
“It wasn’t a great game, it wasn’t close to what we were presenting in the last matches. There were also good things, it was a very equal game. In some moments, Vitória were superior and Corinthians were superior in others. The opponent comes in a moment like Vitória. For me, more than that. [pequenos erros] These are the big mistakes. Passes inside, this is something that hasn’t been happening and we need to adjust”, he began.
“Even so, before that we weren’t efficient. Whoever scored the second goal would win and we came close to doing it long before Corinthians, but we lacked tranquility. At this level of competition, you pay the price. I didn’t see superiority or great the opponent’s chances. It’s another decision that is left behind. There’s nothing to regret, we follow the same work beliefs”, he added.
There were 14 minutes of difference between Alerrandro’s goal and Corinthians’ equalizer with Yuri Alberto. During that time, Leão’s opponent grew in the match and found the net after a good plot between the three main players in the squad. In Carpini’s opinion, the mistakes made at the beginning of the game allowed Timão to realize the instability and gain confidence. Although the nervousness factor was mentioned, the coach rejects the idea that the team felt the game and believes that the pressure of the fight against relegation created a “shell”.
“Today we have a ‘fat’ that we have conquered, but that doesn’t represent anything. Everything is still open. I think that this nervousness that the athletes felt is the same feeling that all of us who live here at the club every day. We prepared a lot for this game. We were very convinced that we would play another great game and get the three points”, he explained.
Individual performances
The defeat maintained Vitória’s eight-year fast without beating the São Paulo team at Barradão. Former Corinthians forward Gustavo Mosquito was one of those who tried most to give Leão the three points. Despite the missed goal, the right winger was replaced due to physical issues. However, Zé Hugo’s entry had already been planned to change the character of the game.
“I had already given the indication that it wouldn’t be able to handle it. From the moment the battery dropped a little, we always try to get feedback from the athlete. I don’t think it was the case to continue with him, the idea was to have a little more in depth with Zé [Hugo]. Even if Mosquito had the physical conditions to stay on the field a little longer, he would put Zé on. A sign that today we have good options, the contributions of other players are always making a difference. Carlinhos started well, Zé started well in several games, so we have options on the bench”, he said.
Also for physical reasons, another player who didn’t even enter the field was defender Neris. In his place, Edu was chosen to act alongside Wagner Leonardo. “We had a change on the left side [Willean Lepo] and a change in the central defense. Two changes make a difference, perhaps this lack of rapport has even compromised some decision-making. The good performance that Edu has had in some matches is no surprise. For the sequence, whether one or the other starts, it depends very much on the opponent, but the tendency is for someone to return who is more integrated and who has already been helping”, he gave the message.
With the 2-1 defeat, Leão loses one position and becomes 13th in the Brazilian Championship. Carpini’s men will have almost two weeks of FIFA Data before facing Criciúma, at Heriberto Hülse. Regarding the opponent, the red-black commander believes that the squad should forget the setback suffered and asked for focus for the last direct confrontation in a row.
