The Chinese government made an announcement this Sunday (10) that it will reinforce the baselines of the territorial sea adjacent to Huangyan Dao – Southern Island -, this is a normal measure to strengthen ocean management and is in accordance with the international law, said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
Huangyan Island is China’s inherent territory, the spokesperson said the Chinese government has demarcated and announced the baselines of the territorial sea adjacent to Huangyan Island in accordance with international laws including the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea and the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone.
The spokesperson also emphasized that China strongly rejects the calls, which reinforce the country’s maritime claims in the South China Sea.
The Philippines enacted the so-called Maritime Zones Law in an attempt to solidify the illegal ruling of the South China Sea arbitration case into national legislation and illegally incorporate China’s Huangyan Island and most of the islands and reefs of the Nansha Islands and related waters in its maritime zones, which seriously infringes on China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea, the spokesperson said.
China firmly rejects this and will continue to take all necessary measures in accordance with the law to firmly defend its national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, the spokesperson said.
