A group of enthusiasts, passionate about finding historical artefacts, made an incredible discovery in the south west of England.
During the excavation, they discovered a carefully hidden cellar containing over 2,500 silver coins dating back to the Norman Conquest. This event became a real sensation in the archaeological world, and the hoard itself is recognized as the most expensive treasure ever found on British soil. The coins, which are a mixture of Saxon and Norman coinage, reflect a key period in England’s history – the transition from Saxon to Norman rule. Experts believe the treasure was buried during the chaotic events of the conquest to protect it from looters.
“It’s fantastic, unbelievable,” enthused one of its discoverers, Adam Staples. – It was like holding history in your hands”. The discovered coins are of great historical value. They allow researchers to better understand the events of 1066, when William the Conqueror defeated the Saxon King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings and ushered in a new era in English history. Interestingly, despite the change in power, the coins minted before and after the conquest show a remarkable similarity.
The treasure was purchased by the government with the help of charitable foundations and will soon be presented to the public at the Somerset Museum. This unique discovery will enable millions of people to touch history and learn more about England’s rich cultural heritage.
