In comparison with September 2023, the industry advanced 3.4% and positive rates were seen in 14 of the 18 locations surveyed

From August to September, Brazilian industrial production grew 1.1%, with an increase in 7 of the 15 locations investigated by the Regional PIM (Monthly Industrial Survey). The biggest increases were recorded by Espírito Santo (2.4%), Goiás (2.4%), Santa Catarina (2.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%).

In comparison with September 2023, the industry advanced 3.4% and positive rates were observed in 14 of the 18 locations surveyed. In the 12-month period, there was an increase of 2.6%, with 17 of the 18 locations analyzed showing positive results, while the index accumulated in the year increased by 3.1%, with positive results in 17 of the 18 locations observed. The data was released this week by IBGE.

“This growth reflects a compensatory movement in relation to the month of July, when there was a more significant drop of 1.3%. Together with the month of August, when there was a positive variation of 0.2%, there is an accumulated 1.4%, which eliminates the loss observed previously. This result is also explained by the improvement in the job market, with lower unemployment and, therefore, greater consumption and disposable income for families, increasing demand, the effect of which falls directly on industrial production”said Bernardo Almeida, analyst at PIM Regional.

Espírito Santo (2.4%) and Goiás (2.4%) had the most pronounced advances, after retreating in the previous month: -0.9% and -0.4%, respectively.

Bernardo Almeida explains that in the case of Espírito Santo, growth is due to the extractive sector, which is very active in the Espírito Santo industry. In Goiás, he attributes to the “extractive and metallurgical sectors acting positively on the behavior of the state’s industry. This rate is the highest since December 2023, when it reached 2.6%”.

The largest industrial park in the country, São Paulo increased 0.9% in September, below the national average.

“This advance comes after 2 negative results, which accumulated a loss of 2.4%. In September, the petroleum derivatives sector was the one that contributed most to the behavior of the São Paulo industry”. After this result, São Paulo is 1.5% above the pre-pandemic level, from February 2020, and 21.4% below the highest level, reached in March 2011.

On the decline side, Ceará (-4.5%), Amazonas (-3.1%) and Pernambuco (-2.6%) recorded the most significant rates. Bernardo Almeida points to the chemical products sectors and the leather goods, travel items and footwear sectors as the main factors behind the decline in Ceará’s industry.

“This decline in Ceará comes after three months of positive results, with a gain of 5.7% in the period”said the analyst. In Amazonas, “the sectors that most influenced were computer equipment, electronic and optical products and machinery and equipment”.

In Pernambuco, the drop was due to influence in the sectors of other transport equipment and motor vehicles.

Industry grows in 14 of 18 locations before 2023

The industrial sector increased by 3.4% compared to September last year and, regionally, 14 of the 18 places surveyed followed the positive result. It is worth mentioning that September 2024 (21 days) had 1 more business day than the same month in the previous year (20).

The biggest advances were recorded by Mato Grosso do Sul (12.6%) and Pernambuco (12.0%). Bahia (7.6%), Northeast Region (7.4%), Ceará (7.1%), Santa Catarina (7.0%), Minas Gerais (5.6%), Maranhão (5.6% ), Mato Grosso (4.8%, Paraná (3.7%), São Paulo (2.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.5%), Espírito Santo (0.8%) and Goiás (0 .2%) were the other places with production progress in September 2024.

In the opposite direction, Rio Grande do Norte (-21.0%) was responsible for the most intense drop in September. The explanation for this performance comes mainly from the activity of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (automotive gasoline and fuel oils). Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%), Amazonas (-1.4%) and Pará (-1.2%) also declined in this comparison.
