Nursing technician is killed with an arrow in Yanomami territory

Nursing technician Vilson Souza, aged 27, died after being hit by an arrow that had been fired by an indigenous health agent in Aldeia Maraxiú, Yanomami territory in Roraima, last Saturday (9).

The professional worked in the village’s Basic Indigenous Health Unit (UBSI), supporting actions that guarantee access to health for indigenous people in the region.

According to the Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI), the Ministry of Health requested the dismissal of the agent suspected of having caused Vilson’s death. He worked in the same health unit as the nursing technician.

The ministry also recommended the withdrawal of the team working in the territory. The case is monitored by the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai).

In a statement, the Ministry of Health expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and stated that it is cooperating with the investigations. A team of professionals from the Yanomami Special Indigenous Health District (Dsei) also provides support to Vilson’s family.
