With 72,021 inhabitants and 30,371 residences, the community surpasses Sol Nascente (DF) in population density
The Rocinha favela, in Rio de Janeiro, was once again recognized as the largest favela in Brazil, in terms of population and number of households, according to the 2022 Census by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), released on Friday ( 8.nov.2024).
According to the data, the community has 72,021 inhabitants and 30,371 occupied homes, ahead of other large communities such as Sol Nascente, in the Federal District, which in the previous survey came in 1st place, and Paraisópolis, in São Paulo. Here is the study (PDF–7 MB).
The IBGE also shows that the demographic distribution in Rocinha is almost equal between men and women. There is a predominance of residents who identify themselves as black or mixed race, totaling 45,778 people.
Brazil has 12,348 favelas, which together are home to more than 16.4 million people. Among the 20 most populous favelas and urban communities in the country, the North region stands out with 8, 6 of which are in Manaus. The Southeast region has 7, the Northeast has 4 and the Central-West only one, Sol Nascente.

- Rocinha, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ): 72,021 residents;
- Sol Nascente, in Brasília (DF): 70,908 residents;
- Paraisópolis, in São Paulo (SP), with 58,527 residents;
- Cidade de Deus/Alfredo Nascimento, in Manaus (AM): 55,821 residents.
