Almost an hour later, however, the USGS reported another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 6.8 and a depth of 23.5 kilometers, also south of the island. According to the state-run Granma newspaper, no deaths have been reported yet, but tremors were felt throughout eastern and central Cuba.
“People here quickly ran into the streets because the ground moved very strongly,” a 65-year-old resident of the city of Santiago de Cuba on the southern coast of the Caribbean island told AFP. From the small village of El Caney de las Mercedes, a few kilometers to the west, houses with cracked walls or collapsed roofs were reported.
