Stricter age monitoring of Instagram users

The social network owned by Meta Instagram has announced the introduction of a new artificial intelligence tool called Adult classifier.

Its main task is to identify teenagers who indicate a false age when registering to bypass the platform’s restrictions.

This is reported by Oxu.Az with reference to Bloomberg.

As soon as the artificial intelligence detects the account of a minor user who is hiding his real age, it will automatically move him to a category with stricter privacy settings. This means that the privacy settings specified during registration will be ignored by the system.

The decision to introduce the adult classifier is due to growing pressure from legislative bodies concerned about the impact of social media on the psychological health of teenagers. According to statistics, more than 40% of Instagram users are young people between the ages of 16 and 24.

The new algorithm will identify users under the age of 16. To continue using the platform without restrictions, they will need to obtain parental consent. In addition, Instagram will complicate the process of indicating a false age during registration by introducing additional checks, such as analyzing the device ID, matching emails, requesting official documents or video selfies.

We remind you that in recent years, Meta has repeatedly faced accusations regarding the negative impact of its social networks on the psyche of teenagers. The company’s own research, made public in 2021 by Frances Haugen, confirmed that Instagram can have a negative impact on the mental health of teenage girls.
