Trump will do anything to take advantage of these feelings. It will give vent to its own narcissism. It will abuse authoritarian tendencies to overcome obstacles that democracy imposes. He will take pleasure in manipulating the anger of the electorate to trample civilizing consensuses on the climate, wars, trade, labor and immigration.
The victory crowns a mutation that transferred control of the American right into the hands of the Trumpist extreme right. In an eight-year cycle, Trump led a revolution that gave Republicans the preference of low-income voters, without having to leave their beds.
The survival of this model will have disastrous consequences throughout the world, including in Brazil. It will establish a new anchor for environmental denialism, social brutality, political divisions and anti-scientific doctrines, to name just a few. To top it off, Trump returns to power after attempting a coup d’état to blatantly challenge the very idea of democracy.
