Miroslav “Meky” Žbirka, Slovak singer and composer living in Prague, died at the age of 69 on November 10, 2021. Žbirka was a legend of the Slovak music scene, multiple Slavik and winner of the Slovakian Singer of the Year poll, since 2006 a member of the Slovakian Hall of Fame, a musician whose albums released since the mid-1980s cost several hundred thousand. He completed many concerts at home and abroad.
A few days before the third anniversary of the singer’s death, his wife Katka published an emotional photo on the social network. “A new generation. #mekynaveky,” she wrote about a photo of a group of small children paying their respects to the musician at the well-known Prague final resting place called Olšanské hřbitovy. Meky had a daughter Denisa from his first marriage. He married for the second time in 1988, with his wife Katka he had a daughter Linda and a son David. At the same time, his wife also acted as his manager and manages social networks to this day. His mother was English, so he was given the nickname Mecca in his youth. She went with him all her life. In 2002, 2004 and 2005 he was the Slovak Golden Nightingale.
Žbirk’s artistic career began when he was 15 years old with the group Modus klubfollowed by Vlad Hronec’s and Gustáv Offerman’s orchestras. In 1976, he and Janko Lehotský renewed the Modus group and the first, successful four-year stage came. In June 1977, they won the Bratislava Lyra with the song Úsmev. When contradictions began to arise in Modus, he also left Lac Lučenič. While still with Modus, he recorded his first own album in 1980, called Doktor sen.
In the era of Czechoslovakia, he was the first Slovak Golden Nightingale for the year 1982. In June 1983, he won the Bratislava Lyra with the composition Nechodí. In 2002, 2004 and 2005, he was the Slovak golden nightingale. He released 16 solo albums, the last one called Posledné veci was released in May 2022. Žbirka recorded it shortly before his death, and his son David completed it.
