German Chancellor Scholz wants a vote of confidence in parliament before Christmas

Germany found itself in a political crisis caused by the collapse of the tripartite government coalition.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that he would be willing to call a vote of confidence in parliament before Christmas, which would pave the way for early elections after the collapse of his governing coalition. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the press agencies DPA and AFP.

The date is earlier than the January 15 he announced last week and is the result of a push for a faster vote.

Scholz, whose coalition collapsed on Wednesday, said in a televised interview that “it would be no problem for me” to ask for a parliamentary vote before Christmas if the main parties agree, having previously talked about a vote in mid-January and an election in late March.

Germany has found itself in a political crisis this week, triggered by the collapse of the three-party governing coalition. Its disintegration occurred after Chancellor Scholz dismissed Christian Lindner from the post of Finance Minister.

He is also the chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which withdrew from the coalition after his dismissal. Transport Minister Volker Wissing remained in the government, but he left the FDP in order not to undermine her position.

Scholz said on Friday that he was ready to negotiate the date of a vote of confidence in his government, which could lead to early elections.
