The president-elect of , , announced this Sunday (10) night the return of , a hard-liner, as director of the Customs Service (ICE). The 78-year-old Republican promised to begin the largest deportation operation of undocumented migrants in the history of the United States at the beginning of his new term. “I am pleased to announce that former ICE Director and border control advocate Tom Homan will join the Trump Administration as responsible for our nation’s borders (‘The Border Czar’),” Trump posted in his Truth Social social network. “I have known Tom for a long time and there is no one better to police and control our borders,” he added.

Tom Homan will be responsible for “all deportations of illegal aliens”, added Trump. During the election campaign, Trump stirred fear of migrants with an inflamed speech and exaggerated numbers, even stating that they “poison the country’s blood”. The president-elect also promised to end the migrant reception programs implemented in recent years by Washington and reinstate the policy of family separation at the border. “I have a message for the millions of illegal immigrants that Joe Biden has allowed into our country: start packing your bags now,” Homan declared in July, during the Republican National Convention.

Homan ran ICE during Trump’s previous term (2017-2021). During Trump’s first presidency, nearly 4,000 migrant children were separated from their parents and sent to detention. Also on Sunday, Trump announced that Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik will be the United States ambassador to the UN. “I am honored to announce Elise Stefanik to serve on my Cabinet as United States Ambassador to the Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough and intelligent fighter for ‘America First,’” Trump said, referring to his “America First” policy, in a statement sent to the New York Post. Stefanik confirmed that she accepted the position and declared herself “truly honored”. Trump, who never admitted defeat at the polls in 2020, won the November 5 elections and will assume the presidency in January.
