According to the DPA, both parties, as well as the coalition greens, agreed on the proposal for elections in this term. The final decision must be taken by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

After the collapse of the German government coalition, the ruling Social Democrats and the opposition Christian Democrats proposed early parliamentary elections on February 23 next year. Referring to sources from both sides, the DPA and Reuters agencies reported on this on Tuesday, writes TASR.

After the departure of the liberal FDP party from the government coalition last week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he would hold a vote of confidence in his government in January. However, under pressure from the opposition, he indicated his willingness to move the vote to an earlier date before Christmas.

If the current minority government does not succeed in the vote of confidence, which is expected, the president will be able to dissolve the Bundestag and call new elections within 21 days. They must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the parliament.

Opposition CDU parliamentary caucus chairman Thorsten Frei said on Tuesday that Scholz could submit a motion for a confidence vote in the last week of November, giving enough time to call an election in mid-February.
