“Mother often told us how she wrote to father while he was in the war. She described what was happening in the city, what news about the war was reaching them. In all, she sent him several hundred letters, including Christmas and Valentine’s Day cards“, Barbara remembers. She is convinced that the old letter ended up in the shopping center in an absurd way: most likely, someone mistook the old paper for a shopping list and took it to the store, where it was lost.
“Dad didn’t like to talk about the war. The only thing he often remembered were his mother’s letters. Therefore, I am grateful that the store did not throw away that letter”– said Barbara.
Harry and Dorothy lived a long and happy life. The man died in 2011 at the age of 90, his wife died at the age of 93. Their daughter says they were in love for the rest of their lives and “totally devoted to each other.” Every day they bought the same newspaper, the Manchester Evening News, and read every issue cover to cover.
