The former head of the Executive assessed that the current president is “doing a good government, as he always did in other terms”
The 94-year-old former president (MDB) stated that he will support a possible re-election attempt by the president (PT) in 2026 and defended that his party, the (Brazilian Democratic Movement), does the same.
“I’m a personal friend of Lula, I like him a lot. So, if Lula is a candidate, I am of the opinion that we should support Lula”said in an interview with the newspaper The State of S. Paulo.
Sarney assessed that Lula is “fmaintaining a good government, as he always did in other terms”. He stated that the PT member represents the “population view”coming from “working class”.
“He was the man who extended the participation of all classes in government. If it weren’t for democracy, Lula wouldn’t be a candidate for president. But with democracy, we were able to have a president recruited from the country’s workers.”these.
During the interview, the electoral scenario in São Paulo was also mentioned. The re-elected mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), was supported by the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the state governor, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). The candidate defeated in the 2nd round, Guilherme Boulos (Psol), was Lula’s name.
Here is what Sarney said: “MDB has 3 robust ministries among the 37 important portfolios: Planning, central Economy portfolio, with Simone Tebet; Cities, in constant dialogue with municipalities, with Jader Filho; and Transport, with a large budget and constant dialogue with the States, with Renan Filho. But it turns out that there is no formal support. It’s all informal. I want to say that it is not a decision that the party has formally made. These were choices that resulted from constant dialogue because we are still in a phase of support between the parties”.
Asked about possible support for the candidacy of (PRTB), in 2026, who also ran for mayor of São Paulo this year, the former president said that he is already in the “be looking at things with a certain impartiality, from afar”.
Sarney also defended the importance of democracy for Lula’s first election, in 2002, and mentioned the relevance of the MDB for the Brazilian political scenario. According to him, the party had a “historic struggle for the return of the democratic regime”.
“O What I can say is that many parties have disappeared and the MDB is firm and strong. One became one thing, another became something else. But the MDB has historical roots.”
