One of the benefits of social media is that people can share information at unprecedented speeds.
It also means that warnings about potential dangers can reach us very quickly, making us all a little safer, at least in theory.
A few years ago, a concerned mother shared this information on social media. Her son, who was gathering branches, developed a strange red mark on his skin. A short time later, he was taken to the emergency room. Andrea Pergola wanted everyone to know about something that could save someone’s life…
When Andrea’s 15-year-old son Logan was collecting branches, he instantly felt a sharp pain, as if something had bitten him.
A few minutes later, a red checkered mark appeared on his arm, which soon began to look like a rash. The rash spread from his arm to his chest. Soon he felt a searing, excruciating pain.
Not only that, but Logan is dazed and pale. His mother washed his hand and rubbed it with garlic to draw out the poison (said to be effective against insect bites). The mother tried, but she failed.
Logan’s grandfather managed to spot the bug that bit his grandson. He put on thick gloves and put the bug in a bag for a closer look.
It was a caterpillar that looked quite “cute” and hairy. However, it turns out to be one of the most venomous caterpillars in all of North America. After finding this information online, Andrea knew she needed to rush Logan to the emergency room.
“Look at this caterpillar, be careful and warn your kids about it,” Andrea wrote on Facebook.
“If your child is bitten by this insect, do not delay and go to the emergency department immediately. We had no idea it was so serious. Regular over-the-counter Benadryl wouldn’t have helped him.”
