New kick room should be in the east of the city and is awaiting installation. Meanwhile, the one on Avenida de Ceuta “is always full” and at capacity.
The subject of the new “chuto room” in Lisbon is being put on the table. The location will be discussed in the coming weeks, between Lisbon City Council and the Institute for Addictive Behaviors and Addictions (ICAD). The president of this entity says it, João Goulãoin an interview with .
“If, in a year from now, it is working, it will be very good”, says the ICAD director, without any certainty regarding dates. Still, he says that the new room “is a necessary response, but one that does not end in itself. It is part of a broader strategy that does not dispense with investment in treatment resources and teams”.
Already Elsa Beloequipment coordinator for the only room in the city, at Quinta do Loureiro (Avenida de Ceuta), admits to Público that the room is at the limit of its capabilities. “The turnout has been frightening. In July, we increased the smoked consumption capacity from six to 18 places, simultaneously”.
In October, the Lisbon City Council told Diário de Notícias the possibility of opening a new shooting room in the Alta area, but now the ICAD admits negotiations in this regard, and points to the East as possible. However, little else is known about the project.
“It makes sense that it would be in this areain the east zone, because consumption there is more dispersed, it happens in several points”, adds Elsa Belo.
In 2018, the city hall had planned to install two units of this type in the city, but only the one on Avenida de Ceuta progressed, and the one that would be implemented in Lumiar became ineffective due to the dispute of area residents.
“It seems to us to be a successful experience”, says Goulão. “As in this case, the new equipment must have multiple features. We are confident in the Lisbon Chamber’s ability to find a space where it can be installedo”.
Across the country, these “chuto rooms” seem to see a higher-than-expected turnout. Also the one in Porto has always been crowded, and Rui Moreira, last year, in nova.
