President received at Planalto 26 representatives from 13 engagement groups who created a document with proposals for the final declaration of the leaders’ summit
The president (PT) met this Monday (Nov. 11, 2024) with representatives of social movements to receive the document created by 13 engagement groups that make up the G20 Social. The idea is that the proposals will be taken to the leaders of the bloc’s countries, who will meet in Rio starting next week.
“We built a process to empower and engage these groups. The debate was held throughout the year on its specific themes in order to contribute to this moment of Brazil’s presidency of the G20”, said minister Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat), responsible for organizing the G20 Social. Read the list of those who participated in the meeting at the end.
The parallel event is an initiative of the Brazilian presidency at the head of the G20, a group that brings together the richest countries in the world, the European Union and the African Union. The event will be held before the official meeting of G20 leaders in Rio. It starts on November 14th. Lula is expected to participate in the closing ceremony, on Saturday morning (Nov. 16, 2024).
According to Macêdo, the documents discussed will be organized in a notebook that will be presented on the last day of the G20 Social. It must be approved unanimously. Afterwards, Lula will take the document to the G20 summit meeting, which will be held on November 18th and 19th. The expectation is that part of the proposals can be incorporated into the group’s final statement.
“This is an unprecedented initiative of the Brazilian presidency of the G20, which is made up of two tracks: geopolitical and economic. In practice, the president created a 3rd track, which is the G20 Social, enhancing the work of engagement groups and opening space for organized civil society from around the world to contribute to the public policies that will be presented to the heads of state”, said Macêdo.
The president of Central Única de Favelas, Preto Zezé, said that the discussions held throughout the year will continue beyond the meeting in Rio. “The meeting was important because we know that in these country summit meetings a lot of things are decided and no one fulfills a lot of things. So, our idea is to point out that, in addition to the G20, we will continue a permanent movement and that it will not just stop at the event. The agenda is permanent”these.
