The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, lamented this Tuesday the death of Army Major General Luís Sequeira, captain of Abril who was part of the Armed Forces Movement in Mozambique.

“I express my regret at the passing of Major General Luís Augusto Sequeira. Military, graduated in Finance, was a professor at the Military Academy and at the Institute of Higher Military Studies, member of the Order of Economists, honorary member of the Portuguese Academy of History and leader of the Association April 25th”, pointed out the President of the Republic, in a statement released today.

In the note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that he was awarded the insignia of Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty “for his involvement with the military movements of the Revolution” on April 25, 1974 – he completed a service commission in Mozambique, in the years of 1974 and 1975.

Who was Luís Sequeira?

Born in 1947, Luís Augusto Sequeira died on the 9th, indicates a note of condolences released that day by the president of the 25 de Abril Association, Vasco Lourenço.

“Military of April of all times, it was in Mozambique, where the 25th of April found him, that he developed the conspiratorial activity that would lead us to that initial day, whole and clean. Militant of the values ​​and ideals that then launched us into the extraordinary epic liberator, which helped us to achieve as Men, Luís Sequeira has always maintained an important civic action, in its defense and consolidation”, wrote Vasco Lourenço.

He was currently a member of the Representative Assembly of the Order of Economists, which remembered him as a “great participant and promoter” of the Order’s activities, in a note of condolence released on Saturday, which also highlights the “important civic action in defending and consolidating the values of freedom and democracy”.

He was appointed general secretary of the Ministry of National Defense in 2005, under the supervision of former minister Luis Amado.

Major General Luís Augusto Sequeira entered the Military Academy in 1964, where he completed the Military Administration course.

Graduated in Finance from the Higher Institute of Economics and Management of the Technical University of Lisbon and in Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, he attended, at the Institute of Higher Military Studies, the general Command and General Staff course ( 1982-1983), the General Staff course (1987-1988) and the Command and Direction higher education course (1997-1998).

He was a full professor at the Military Academy from 1983 to 1987 and, during that period, a member of its research and development committee. For eight years he was a professor at the Institute of Higher Military Studies, having coordinated, from 1998 to 2000, the Administration Teaching Department.

From 2000 to 2004 he was director of Army Finance services and, at the same time, president of the Military Administration Service Council. Since October 15, 2004, he has been a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Social Action of the Armed Forces.
